weird regional architecture time

alrighty. so!! It is regional architecture fixation times around here, so I will summarize and you can figure out if you want to click the read more button.

New Enlgand Farmers in the 1860s to 1880s remodeled their houses to better compete with bigger farms out west. The name is funny, and the house is gorgeous*.

*to me, IDK about you. Maybe? Hopefully.

Ok. so! Thank you for indulging me. This is the house we are talking about.

Yes, this a terrible first pic, the listing doesn’t start off with this. I dug for an image to explain the very, very niche architectural style this is. Or, was remodeled into…sometime after the 1860s. (the garage doors are new, but it’s the whole “they would have if they could have” thing.)

Around that time, New England farmers (like the owner of this house) would have had an issue. They weren't the only game in town anymore, and folks in Boston and other big towns could get their meat, butter, and vegetables for cheaper from big farms out west. Now that (post civil war) there was a widespread train network, and the refrigerated train car (rough draft 1842, worked out to be functional for widespread use 1857) could bring perishables like butter straight to them, very often by the end of the next day.

The “let’s make your farm efficient” movement was loving this whole cheap ads in newspapers thing, and one of the more out there ideas was the Ell. (the little connecting bit in the middle that seems so sensible for snow/rain reasons.)

Popular in England/Europe where farm buildings tended to be built of stone and thus not needing to worry about fire as much*, to keep 1) tools and the farmer dry/out of nasty weather in the winter, and to provide 2) workshop space for the off season.

Yeah, they remodeled so they could have a work-from-home office. In the late 1800s. Humans are amazing and never change.

The best part? The very official name for this style?

Big-house-little-house-back-house-barn. I’m not kidding. It supposedly comes from a local kid’s game rhyme, but I can't find the rhyme. So that remains to be seen.

*These connected house/barn styles did pose a risk of losing EVERYTHING if one of them was on fire, because the fire would and could spread to the other via the ell. The separate style remained popular for this reason, and the fad largely died out by the 1880s.

When I say regional, I mean maybe four states regional. The “only states north of Boston + mass count” regional. This was such a localized trend that finding original ones in Vermont and Massachusetts are rare.

I admit I used to post more of this kind of shit before Discord. I love how Discord is where friends are and I can just talk about things all the time. but I know, for twenty years now, I’ve always had an online journal and it’s been useful primarily for me to look back at my life and what’s going on, and sometimes I realize Discord’s not gonna do that for me, i can search the archives of conversations as long as I’m still in that server but it’s not the same thing.

anyway here are two random photos I took this morning, archived here as a little slice of life.

This is a huge order i have spent most of the last two weeks working on; the pink rubbermaid on top contains 11 VHS tapes, and the blue one underneath had about 25 3″ Super-8 reels.

This family now has all their memories digitized.

Now I’m working on another order, 19 VHS tapes, and I am doing my best but it won’t be done before I leave for the farm so I’ll have to come back to it.

it is Spring, officially, and yesterday I wore the leggings I’ve been wearing all winter and sweated my ass off. I think the climate control in this building is broken, the heat didn’t work for most of April and now it’s airless and stuffy and I don’t think the A/C works either. Cool.

Anyway not feeling super positive about my fashion choices but as usual i dressed in the dark from whatever was in the room I can access, so. I should dig out literally any other pair of shoes but it was this or the rose gold metallic Birkenstocks and I wasn’t feeling rose gold. God what would it even be like to have like. Fashion sense and a wardrobe instead of a collection of things that came in my size so I bought them. Ha!

This afternoon I have a meeting with a kitchen remodel company to talk about redoing our kitchen. I am desperately trying to exercise an opinion about this, as I should care deeply, but am so burned-out that the very idea of making a decision is very nearly giving me hives. But my god we could have a dishwasher. I just need to hang on to this idea. God she asked us for “inspo pics” and I actually read an article on kitchen remodels of 2022 by Southern Living magazine and was so viscerally repulsed by every single contradictory tip they mentioned that I can’t bring myself to do any further research for this.

Here’s what I got:

1) standard size appliances. nothing custom. nothing custom whatsoever. anything that breaks, i want to be able to rip it out and put something else in there, because it’s a size everything comes in.

2) nothing built-in. sink gets fucked-up or stained? comes out of a standard-sized hole and I put a new one in. bada-boom. fuck built-ins.

3) pot rack or something, I have my cast iron stacked on a fucking shelf and it’s the fucking pits, I will not do that, give me a fucking hook to hang it on this is garbage.

4) fuck minimalism I just want somewhere to put my shit and fuck your ADHD advice I deserve to own things if i want them, I have a collection of kitchen items I actually use and I will not be discarding any of those things nor will I be hiding them for aesthetic reasons, but equally I do want to have counter space I can actually use to work upon, so I need places for my shit to go

5) fuck maximalism i do not care that chintz is briefly in fashion again, I want solid bright colors and ok shit can coordinate but I’m not buying all new shit just so it’s matchy and by God I do not have room for purely decorative pieces of furniture (this was the part of the Southern Living article where I lost my mind, they legit recommended putting in antique furniture for purely decorative purposes and i was like but actually why)

6) nothing is gonna be white or gray unless that’s literally the only color it comes in

7) cabinet hardware needs to either be radially symmetrical *or* fastened in two places, ask me how i thought of that one

8) can I have cabinets not made of plastic? do they make those? or will they cost more than my house is currently worth in which case maybe i will have to make my peace with plastic...

9) fuck stone countertops I have never seen one I did not hate, I want something that water and heat won’t damage but also one that won’t fucking obliterate me if I bump into it, do they still make those?

10) i guess i did have a lot of opinions. idk. someone please help me replace the falling-apart not very big picture window in the east wall of my kitchen with something nicer. please be gentle with me about the price. it will be a lot. i am cautiously aware of this but probably will cry anyway.

I rather like this cozy older apt. in Sweden- the grainy pics are from a magazine where it was featured. Well, at least it’s not white, but gray with muted earth tones. I don’t know why, but fairy lights always make a room look better. Here, they’re wrapped around a pipe.

Beautiful fireplace and I like the idea of a little bookshelf in a non-working hearth.

A collection of mirrors always looks great on a wall. I like how they layered some and they’re not hanging exactly straight.

Remodeled kitchen. Interesting glass in the doors.

I often wonder why people in old pictures look so unhappy. My grandmother had a large portrait of her parents on their wedding day and they looked like they were going to their doom.

More Play Ideas Part 2 :

11. Pokemon Home Challenge

I love pokemon and think it'd be cool to make a build where a home's rooms had different themes based off of pokemon types! Do you like grass type Pokemon? You could build a greenery room or an herbalist's kitchen. Like fighting types? Add a gym! You could even mix types like in the game with idk Fire - Ghost types or something. Or a build based off of each eeveelution? Do whatever!

12. Cobwebs Challenge

Make a home that's dark, dirty, and spooky! This is a home for a ghost sim and the challenge is to tell a story about how a ghost sim is living in a house that hasn't been lived in forever, only for a new sim / sim family to move into it and try to clean and fix it up! Will the ghost be welcoming to these changes or try to drive the new people out? That's your story to tell! Bonus points for showing before and after pics of what the home looked like when the ghost sim was alive.

13. Clutter & Yard Sale Challenge

If you're a minimalist this may not be the best for you, or it may be a way to step out of your comfort zone! As Sims live in their homes for awhile, isn't it weird to just have the same stuff lying around in the exact same places? They live there ya know!

In each room of your house you'll need to try and replace: 1. A large piece of furniture 2. Add a new bookshelf/shelf or storage unit of some sort (could be as small as a shoe box idk) 3. Exchange old plants with new ones 4. 'fix the lightbulbs' aka create new lightings 5. Upgrade an item like a radio or television 6. Rotate some furniture around or switch where a bedroom with an office or something. 7. Add 10 new pieces of clutter/decor and sell at least 4 old ones. Yes, to each room!

14. Bedroom... downgrade? Challenge

Your Sims family is expanding with a baby or perhaps grandma needs to move in with you, and you can't afford a completely new room! Looks like some kids will have to share a room. Remodel two rooms by combining two kids bedrooms into one / remodel or add bunk beds whatever you want. And remodel the previous kids room to the new room for either the baby or grandparent moving in.

15. Fixer Upper Challenge

Do you still have your very first Sims home file? Well it's time to grab that piece of junk and fix it up! This challenge is simply to go back to your first built from scratch home and without changing the initial shape of the home , to remodel it completely! You may destroy inner walls and add a porch, but other than that don't change the original outer walls. What's your before and after going to look like I wonder?

Random Sims Challenge ideas :

Note* I'm so new to the Sims community I have no idea if these exist already sorry ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

1. Work-Life balance

Choose your career but you are unable to build the skill needed for it while at home until you have reached level 5 in three other skills. This will push you to work your Sims outside of just their work life.

2. The Stomach of Steel

Have a character with the glutton trait essentially live only off spoiled foods and crappy microwaved meals. No real cooking is allowed for this sim until they have read all the cook books available (ie: baking, cooking, gourmet, etc.)

3. Agoraphobia

Your Sim doesn't have access to the outside world. No housemates or neighbors can interact. Penpal via e-mails allowed. One pet may be allowed but it is also not allowed to go outside. They have all their essentials indoors with no windows on site unless they are boarded or curtained. Food delivery is not an option either. Artist career paths must use digital art only as selling easel paintings means going to the post office irl. Authors won't work either because you'd have to publish via a mailbox and that's not allowed either, remember your Sims is petrified of going outside. Is there a fire? Put it out yourself. No firefighters and no finding an escape route outside.

Note* I've had times in my own life where I've been unable to leave my home for months due to this, I am not romanticizing agoraphobia I just think it'd be an interesting way to play in the Sims.

4. From the ground up.

Buy a plot of land, and with only 25,000 or less simoleons you should lay down a basic shelter. This first place will be yours until you've saved up to go elsewhere. No adding rooms. Upgrading & repairing broken things is fine. Live off the grid for this first home. And sustain yourself via gardening and farm animals until you have saved up 50,000 simoleons to purchase a new home. Repeat the process of no remodeling with the new home until you've saved 100,000 to move/reconstruct your home all over again.

5. Monkey see Monkey do

Have a few Sims in a household and have your main sim copy anything their roommates are doing. Did one roommate flirt with another? Go flirt with them too. Did they just go take a shower? You should do that too. Have this sim only build up their skills and relationships via copying what they see others doing.

6. Opposites Attract

Make two vastly different Sims in all : Looks, Style, likes/dislikes, career paths, personality, etc. Get them together and see if they can learn to love each other's differences or if a break up/divorce is inevitable.

7. Color Scheme Build

Your new home should have the following : entryway, living room, kitchen, dining room, study, bedroom, guestroom, bathroom, guest bath, & basement. Each room can only have one color aesthetic with no repeats. Aka: A green room with only green objects, a pink room etc. You can use different hues of the color of course but putting something like a yellow rug on a blue carpet is not.

8. Never enough plants

For the green thumb and gardeners out there, this challenge is to have more green than home. Whether it be a small house with a large gardened yard or a regular home with plants absolutely filling all the shelves and tabletops. Have the plants be everywhere. Bonus points if your Sims clothes have flower patterns and such as well.

9. Four Story Home

I'm not a person who likes switching from up and down the stairs all the time to find my Sims but having it as a challenge could get me more used to it. It's as simple as making a home with four floors but you can make it more like an apartment or something by having bathrooms, bedrooms, kitchens, etc on every level.

10. Do you actually live here?

It's easy to want your sim to have a similar looking household. But what if you had a goth living in a kawaii/bright colored aesthetic home, or a minimalistic sim living in a home full of clutter? However you make your sim out to be, the house has to be the complete opposite.

I don’t think I’ve ever used the flapper dress before, so I went for a sparkly NYE outfit~ I almost went with garter socks to match the time period, but I don’t have the white ones, and black socks with black shoes seemed like a faux pas, lol. The white sequin leggings look cute, though!

I also gave the whole house new lighting~ Seeing the cloud flooring change colors with the lighting was so awesome, but turquoise lights look awesome in there!

Okay so I’m nowhere near done! But ever since @sg5150 came out with a Modular Living Kit (that you should def get) I just HAD to make a mobile home for an archaeologist character of mine!!
